What to Expect at Family Camp
At the heart of Family Camp are the families who make the weekend so meaningful. Camp brings together people who live nearby, have kids in similar age groups, and truly understand the impact of Type 1 Diabetes on the whole family.
Throughout the weekend, families can connect in small-group discussions, hear from diabetes experts, and enjoy fun activities in a supportive, T1D-aware community.
And yes—it's all 100% gluten free!
We proudly accommodate all families and volunteers with celiac disease.
A sample agenda may include:
Breakout groups for parents and caregivers of similarly aged kids
Expert presentations on T1D research, tech, emotional well-being, and day-to-day management
A vendor fair featuring the latest in diabetes gear and local resources
Family fun: crafts, canoeing, hikes, disc golf, mini golf, and more

Sessions are shaped by community feedback and may include topics such as school safety, diabetes technology, research updates, emotional wellness, and family life with Type 1 diabetes. The weekend also includes opportunities to connect with other families, share experiences, and learn from teens living with T1D as they discuss growing up with diabetes and building independence in their care.
“An incredible weekend with my fellow T1D families - we were welcomed immediately by this new community of brave, soulful, and hilarious people.”
“Before Camp we hadn’t met anyone else with Type 1 Diabetes. We felt alone.”
For Children:
Family Camp offers a fun, age-based children’s program led by trained volunteers with experience supporting families impacted by Type 1 diabetes. Activities include arts and crafts, games, outdoor activities, and opportunities to build meaningful friendships with peers who understand life with diabetes.
All volunteers complete Washington State background checks, and formal caregiver handoffs help ensure children are supervised throughout the weekend.
An on-site medical lead is available to assist as needed. Scheduled blood glucose check-ins and snack breaks are built into the daily schedule, and counselors are trained to respond cautiously and support low blood sugar treatment when necessary.
“The only downfall was how devastated my daughter was to leave…with the help and encouragement of camp buddies, she tested herself for the first time this weekend!”
“I cannot say in words how transformed and empowered I feel. It was awesome.”

What is the schedule for the weekend?
The full agenda will be posted in the months leading up to camp, but here’s a sample:
How much time will the kids spend with us vs. with the camp counselors?
Counselors will ensure your kids are safe and have a great time while you are attending the various speakers and breakout sessions throughout the weekend. A formal camper hand-off process is utilized to ensure camper safety
Children are with their families for all meals, snacks, family free time on Saturday afternoon, camp fire and overnight.
Who will be watching my child?
Our volunteers either have Type 1 Diabetes or a close connection to it.
Volunteer counselors are ages 16 and up. Junior counselors are ages 13-15. Each age group will have one or more counselor over the age of 18.
All volunteers pass a background check prior to camp and go through a volunteer training course offered by ConnecT1D.
What if my child needs help blood Glucose Checking during a play session?
Volunteers will contact our medical lead to assist campers that are not yet able to check their blood glucose themselves.
We train our counselors to err on the side of caution and they will provide glucose tabs or juice “in the field” on a case by case basis.
What if my child is low while they are in a play session?
If your child does not check their own blood glucose, counselors will work with the medical lead or bring you to your child to have you assist with checking.
If your child does check their own blood glucose, they will complete the check on their own and counselors will provide juice or glucose tabs, if necessary, and update you during the next camper hand off.
We encourage parents to consider the amount of activity their kids will be doing for the weekend and adjust basal rates accordingly.
What medical supplies do I need to pack?
You should bring all testing, low blood sugar treatment supplies, insulin, needles and pumping supplies necessary for your child’s care for the weekend. Back up low blood sugar supplies will be available.
My child has Celiac Disease. Will there be food available that they can eat?
We know that 10% of all people with Type 1 Diabetes have a dual diagnosis of celiac disease; we have thus elected to make our entire event gluten free. We work with the kitchen staff at Warm Beach to ensure that best practices for food prep are taken. While we cannot promise the event will be 100% immune from gluten cross contamination, Camp Leo + ConnecT1D staff and volunteers with closely with Warm Beach staff to ensure that all precautions are taken to ensure safety. Dedicated gluten free toasters and baking equipment will be used in all instances. All kitchen surfaces and cooking stations will have been deeply cleaned and sanitized prior to our arrival on Friday evening. All programs running at Warm Beach Camp during Family Camp will also have gluten free menus so as to not risk cross-contamination from other meals.
Can grandparents, caregivers and other family members attend camp?
Absolutely! The whole family is welcome to join in a weekend of learning and camaraderie with other families impacted by Type 1 Diabetes.
Can we bring our dog?
Unfortunately our camp facilities cannot accommodate pets. Exceptions are made for service animals including Diabetes Alert Dogs.
Is there Wi-Fi at camp?
Wi-Fi is available in select locations throughout the camp, but not reliably in all cabins.
What Are your COVID Protocols?
