Parent-Designated Adult Classes for 2015

  • Seattle Children's Hospital 4800 Sand Point Way NE Seattle, WA, 98105 United States (map)

Seattle Children’s offers classes for volunteers to assist children with diabetes‑related tasks at school. The parent designates an adult volunteer, often a teacher, office personnel, principal or school parent volunteer, to attend a three‑hour training session at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Please note that this class is not designed for school nurses; however, they are welcome to attend as an observer as space permits. In order to become a parent‑designated adult (PDA), the volunteer must have additional training (suggested annually) provided by a Certified Diabetes Educator or expert in diabetes.

During the training, volunteers get an overview of diabetes and learn about:

  • Blood sugar testing
  • Insulin administration
  • Ketone testing
  • Hypoglycemia signs, symptoms and treatment
  • Glucagon administration
  • Insulin pump basics: how they work, treatment of hyperglycemia, delivering boluses, infusion sets and insulin on board

Dates may change if needed. Classes often fill up a few months in advance, so it is important to sign up as far in advance as possible. The class is free and parents do not need to attend with their PDA.

Parking is available in Lot 1. Please walk across the driveway and enter through the River entrance of Seattle Children’s Hospital. Please bring a photo ID and the student’s individual healthcare plan.

To register, please call Kerry Gooch at 206‑987‑5037. For more information or to see the list of dates and locations for this class, visit the Seattle Children’s Hospital classes and events page, and search for “diabetes”.
